I do love finishing my work with a customised frame. I think it completes it. Just like the final touches of your outfit, which might be some jewellery or a scarf or a hair accessory, an embellished frame adds that personal touch that separates from the crowd. (At least for me!) This embroidery is a traditional Greek embroidery from the island of Skyros. It's called "Gamos", which means Wedding. It was one of a few unfinished embroideries I inherited when my mum passed and I'd long been meaning to finish. After sourcing the right yarns I finally completed it and decided to created a customised frame for it. How you might customise an Ikea frame for your embroidery.
The Owl was a commissioned artwork for an Airbnb located in the centre of Athens. I was thrilled to receive this commission and amazed at the synchronicity of its subject matter as I had recently been sketching and exploring the idea of creating an artwork with an owl! The theme of this particular Airbnb is the Owl of Athena, which of course inspired the ancient greek elements in my design. I thoroughly enjoyed creating this owl and was super pleased with the result, as I believe my client was too! The Owl etched artwork on wood - process timelapse
It’s great how I can show you the process and some of what goes into making my artwork in a Timelapse video. But when you consider that what you are seeing is approximately 200 creative hours crammed into an 8-minute video… well, it kinda distorts reality just a bit 😆 There’s a lot more that goes unseen. The research, the studies and drafts, throwing out and reworking, moments of frustration and moments of joy, working out the colours, constructing the boards -here you see it already constructed and me just prepping the surface. Then the inevitable changes that happen as I work, mostly in addition or alteration of details and colours. Adapting and listening… then of course setting up the camera and finally editing the videos. I love it all! I have also visited the Lake with him and fell in love with these magnificent creatures, amongst others!  One of the images of the pelicans that I have imprinted in my mind is how they glide so elegantly on the water, proud, imposing and graceful. This bold, bright and colourful artwork marks a return to my creating mixed media relief artwork on wood. Following a break of about two years, during which I researched and explored other techniques and a variety of painting skills and media I was -quite unexpectedly- inspired by some ceramic sculptural plant pots. Making of Summer Cocktail Mixed Media Relief Art
A few years ago I recorded a few videos while creating Amalia with me blabbing away about working with the pyrograph creating relief artwork. I’d never done this kind of thing before, recording myself speaking into the camera as I worked, so when I first played them back I cringed in horror of what I sounded like! But while updating my website and looking for material to add about Amalia I realised I’d never even posted a small clip of the work. Looking through my files I found these clips and looking at them today I wonder what I was so horrified about! They’re not too bad and they give you an idea of my process and work with the pyrograph. Progess video of my daughter's and her dog's portrait painting
This is the process video of a watercolour portrait I did for my daughter, whose birthday it was last week. Trying to improve my video recording of process painting with a little more variety of angles and speed. Actually I’ve had this video ready for a while now but what with all the wildfires in Greece devastating the country I didn’t really feel in the mood to post anything. Anyway, here we are… I’m still learning watercolor portraiture and it’s a lot of fun. I’m also getting better at just accepting where I am, making mistakes and learning from them and simply enjoying the process. My Birthday Girl
I recently bought myself a yummy selection of Sennelier's L'Aquarelle watercolours as I've become quite enamoured with this medium. (The majority of this stash of colours was a birthday gift - luck me!!) So first things first, when I get new colours I play with them, mixing them and making colour charts to see how they work. Sennelier's watercolours are pure pleasure to work with. Such vibrant colours that delight my senses! (Disclaimer: This is not a paid promotion!! But it would be nice to receive some freebies! 😉 Maybe one day 😄 ) The first chart I made I mixed each colour with varying quantities of Payne's Grey to get a selection of shades. Then I also made a chart mixing complementary colours to get colourful greys. Finally, although you don't see it until the end, I always do a couple of colour wheels using cool primaries in the one, and warm primaries in the second to see how they mix, which colours I like when mixed and which not.
