Innovative Tile Designs for Your Space
The other day I was looking for some inspiration and ideas so I was browsing my Pinterest feed, as one does, and I stumbled upon this photo of a space spectacularly decorated with these colourful tiles.
I searched for quite a while, almost giving up, before finally discovering the owner: Pallavi Sen, who is an interdisciplinary creative from Bombay.
Looking at her “Tiles” stories highlights on her Instagram page I can see she designed and installed them herself (with a little help from her friends🤗).
I love the playful and cheerful vibe this space exudes and such great inspiration to do something similar.
When decorating my own spaces I have found it super challenging to find just the right tile designs I want.
Here below is another example of imaginative tile application on a large expanse of wall, this time using small square mosaic tiles in different colours to create a custom mural. Unfortunately, I was unable to find the source for this one.
These are great examples of how you might decorate a large expanse of wall with tile using either your own hand painted tiles or applying mosaic tiles in a specific pattern to create something original.
You should also look at some wonderful examples of some such applied to floors, as seen here below through the lens of @parisianfloors
Talking about tiles, this reminds me of a creative collaboration I thoroughly enjoyed several moons ago with a handmade cement tile manufacturer in Crete, Tsourlakis Tiles, where a few of my designs were made up using this method.
I’ve long been thinking that I would love to actually paint some of my own tiles, but I don’t have a kiln of my own – poor excuse, I know, because I could always find someone to work with…..
I also saw an artist painting directly on glazed tiles using Pebeo 150 for Porcelain speciality paints, which I understand to be highly durable and thus suitable for such surfaces.
Here also is a video showing you how to use these paints. Of course there are many more videos on YouTube if you want to explore this.
The artist’s name I mentioned who uses Pebeo 150 Porcelain paints is Myrsini Alexandridi and I’ve added a few of her murals here below for reference.
I don’t know about you, but I sure am fired up to give this a go. Would you like to see more if I try this out? I would certainly love to see what you create!
Happy Creating!
