A year of creative exploration: Part 2 from design to finished artwork

It’s always a surprise when I feel inspired to create another artwork on wood etched with the pyrograph. Why? Well because every time I finish a piece I am sure it is my last because the process usually ends up being intensely involved, long and at times arduous. Even though I say to myself I will create a more minimalistic piece I always get carried away. I’ve been looking to create things that take a shorter amount of time. Which actually doesn’t make sense now since I have also begun exploring textile arts and in particular embroidery which also needs considerable time to complete each piece! Go figure!!!

Summer Cocktail and what inspired my return to relief artwork on wood

This bold, bright and colourful artwork marks a return to my creating mixed media relief artwork on wood. Following a break of about two years, during which I researched and explored other techniques and a variety of painting skills and media I was -quite unexpectedly- inspired by some ceramic sculptural plant pots.

How I got my joy of painting back and learning gouache with Lena Rivo

Now, you might think watercolour would have been the most obvious choice as a travelling medium, but I was still a bit wary of watercolour, imagining it to have a huge learning curve for me and something I would find hard to tackle. Additionally, I come from a predominantly designer background so I thought gouache would suit me better.

The 100 day project and a return to blogging.

This was going to be my first blog post of 2021. But my previous post took precedence because when I was introduced to Baya Mahedienne’s artwork I was too excited not to write about it immediately! 😊

    Discovering Baya Mahieddine’s iconic art

As I write this I am grateful for friends of a kindred spirit like Leigh, especially at a time of extended isolation and where friends I thought were friends have all but slipped away. This form of imposed isolation has shone a light on what is true and important, false and unnecessary, genuine and, well, what isn’t.

Punching Resistance in the face and getting back on track

So I just got done scraping my new artwork after pyrographing it and cleaning up my workspace in readiness to start my favourite part of the process – painting! However, I find myself needing to pause a minute before I dive headlong into colouring and happily lose myself in it – hoping this isn’t another ploy being used by Resistance to stop me…and I’ve had a lot of Resistance to contend with in the last few months.
